“Amanda Gorman”

Amanda Gorman was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and was raised by a single mother. She began writing at only a few years of age.

Gorman has a speech impediment, making it hard for her to say certain letters of the alphabet, especially the letter "r." As a child, she started writing poetry to help find her voice, and in high school, she began reciting her poetry out loud, which helped improve her speech. Gorman was a youth delegate for the United Nations when she was 16.

She attended Harvard University, majoring in sociology, and graduated cum laude. In 2021, she made history as the youngest poet to write and read her work at a presidential inauguration. She read her poem "The Hill We Climb," referencing both painful history and hope for the future.

In the same year, Gorman also read a poem at the Super Bowl, co-hosted the Met Gala, and was named an Estée Lauder Global Changemaker.

Before she steps on the stage, Gorman repeats this mantra: "I am the daughter of Black writers, descended from Freedom Fighters who broke their chains and changed the world. They call me."

HELLA INSPIRED.
